hahaha, at last, a freebie (at least for this day at gotd) a music app designed for the guitar player.
i'm just a guitar beginner but this application has the potential to help my inner creativity (if i have one, LOL).
downloaded fast from gotd server using mozilla firefox 23.0
installed on windows 7 home premium sp1 x64 (all microsoft updates installed as of august 8, 2013) desktop computer with 2x2gb ddr3 1600mhz gskill memory running at 1333mhz (default supported by mobo), intel dh55tc mobo, nvidia 9800gt 1gb ddr3 video card, 1tb sata I hitachi hdd.
the software package is in compressed zip format, GuitarTabMaestro7, size is 22.9 MB (24,083,877 bytes).
when uncompressed, the full 30-day trial installer is present.
the gotd activation wizard is likewise present.
i closed guitar maestro 7.x after installing it and clicked activation wizard "activate.exe", size 3.14mb, file version 2.0.1.16, product version 2.0.1.0.
activation was successful and the product is licensed to "GiveAwayOfTheDay" (aka GAOTD, you, you... nevermind... :) )
in the little time i have used this software, i found the following:
the guitar maestro 7.x app has a few music sample compositions.
the music samples are playable under its own built-in music player.
the only drawback i have encountered so far is the lack of a "back" button in the main gui, unless i'm mistaken or missed this button (similar to back button of steam game client).
guitar maestro 7.x has the ability to export musical composition to:
image, pdf, or audio (wave format), and has the menu to publish it in the web.

I play the guitar for a few years now, so I gave this a try. I also use Guitar Pro and Powertab.
Installation was quick, registered without problem. My impressions:
The GUI is a mess. That's one of the biggest problems. After Guitar Pro, you find yourself lost. I think you can get used to it if you take the time, but it needs some improvement.
The sound: Midi, not better, not worse. Sounds like an old mobile phone's ringtone. It's not a major drawback because it doesn't have to sound good, it's enough if you can distinguish the instruments. The drums and keys are good, distortion guitars are not.
I tested it with some of the demo files, and some downloaded tabs. It opened and played the demo files well (they are in sfd format), and also .mid files, but had some trouble with .gp4 tabs. Notes were off (maybe it doesn't like detuned guitars) and it couldn't handle some time signature changes (Dream Theater is a very good test subject I think :) ).
What I liked about it is that it has quite a lot of features. You can add custom tunings, you can find a chord list, it can import .mid and .gp4, you can export to wave or mp3 etc.
Personally I like GP better, but if you don't have it, it worth a try.
It's a music scoring program and it's clearly not aimed at guitarists. Look at the tutorial page, it's all score notation. It's got nothing to do with guitar tablature. This program isn't at all useful for guitarists who use tab and don't read music. If you wanted to buy a guitar tab program you'd have to pick guitar pro over this any day. I look at this and it's simply completely unusable. I wouldn't even begin to bother trying to work it out and I studied film scoring and composition with a major in guitar.
Downloaded and installed fine on Win 7 64bit activated fine. works good but my concern is the statement made above

Das hätte ich gerne gehabt, wie ich Gitarre gelernt habe: spielt einem vom Notenblatt alles runter, wie's gespielt gehört, mit Metronom, Abspielen mit langsamerer Geschwindigkeit usw.
großer Wermutstropfen: für's Einscannen bereits vorhandener Notenblätter benötigt man zusätzlich "SharpEye" für schlappe 149 USD...

Interessantes Angebot - da schreiben sie auf ihrer Homepage (shop), GuitarTab Maestro kostet $24.97 statt 49,95$. Dann wäre es doch schon interessant, mit dem Code darauf noch 50% zu bekommen.
Geht man auf "buy now", erscheint jedoch als Preis 41,30€. Schnell den Code eingegeben, doch aus unerklärlichen Gründen wird der oben genannte Code MAES-3K9Y-GOTD nicht akzeptiert: "The gift certificate or promotional code is not valid."
Also bleibt es bei 41,30€.

@ Jens: ist halt mehr Arbeit, ein Instrument zu lernen, als nur am PC zu zocken...; es soll aber noch vereinzelt Menschen geben, die noch Musik machen, anstatt sie nur zu konsumieren.
