This software is better than most previously offered DVD rippers because it’s a lot faster and the ripped files are more compact. For example, using a previous giveaway, Wondershare DVD Ripper, the ripped file took 25 minutes and was 4.3 GB. This time, it only took 15 minutes and the file was compressed to 2.5 GB without any noticeable quality downgrading. This giveaway is definetly worth the download, especially from such a trusted Developer. Previously offered WINX DVD author was of extremely good quality, too
Any particular reason for the re-run? Was anything wrong with the version of a few days ago?
I have no idea how WinXDVD Ripper compares to DVDFab etc when it comes to DRM. WinXDVD Ripper cannot copy the entire structure, menus etc from a video DVD disc. What it does do is trans-code & optionally re-size DVD video you select -- all video including trailers etc is listed. The output format is customizable, without presets for various portable devices... AVI gives you a choice of DivX & Xvid with MP3 or AC3 audio, MPEG is limited to mpg2 with AC3 or mp2 audio, MP4 lets you choose std mpeg4 or H264 & aac audio, WMV = wmv1 or 2 plus wmav1 or 2 sound, MOV is limited to mpeg4 & aac, & then you have separately, FLV / MP3 & audio only MP3. You can set the audio Sample Rate, Bit Rate, & volume, but are limited to stereo [while wma & AC3 formats can be multi-channel, you can't encode them that way here]. You can set the video in/out points, trimming the length or duration of your output file, & take a snapshot, and you have the options to have subtitles added permanently [i.e. you can't turn them on/off]. Beside the file format/compression, you can set the video frame rate [i.e. 24/25/29... fps], frame size, & *only* one bit rate -- there is no apparent option for VBR [Variable Bit Rate, used to reduce file sizes]. Under Output Profile, every thing but mpg2 gives you 3 options: "Original Size & Keep Aspect Ratio", "Custom Size & Keep Aspect Ratio", & "Custom Size with Custom Aspect Ratio"... The 1st locks your frame width to the original 720, but on a 16:9 DVD cuts height to 404 (from 480 NTSC) -- the 2nd option keeps this same ratio, but let's you set the frame width (320 X 180 vs. std. 320 X 240) -- only the 3rd option lets you set height & width [the best choice for many (most?) portable players with 4:3 screens]. The MPG2 output format includes options for DVD, SVCD, & VCD.
WinXDVD Ripper performance is overall good in XP Pro SP3 32 -- better than the average performance you'll see with most rippers &/or converters. It seems to try & use more than 1 core, though the total CPU use was still around 25%. It deserves at least a star (or 3) for trans-coding to H264 without AAC audio problems -- something sadly all too rare. The program itself takes up ~19 MB, & other than Start Menu shortcuts leaves Windows pretty much alone. Other than the lack of VBR settings, the only somewhat bad thing I can say is that for some reason I don't really care for the GUI color or design -- surprising since no GUI has ever bothered me... can't really explain it... Sorry.
Alternatives:
Well, if you're after speed & have a compatible card, go for one of the Geforce or ATI utilities that use DX & your card's GPU... WinXDVD Ripper is quick, but the ATI utility is 2 or 3 times faster. For more settings, including VBR, plus device profiles I use an earlier GOTD from Xilisoft. While it doesn't produce video that plays in a whole lot of portable players, Nero Recode going to Nero Digital is both fast & top quality.
Tips:
I use a DVD Recorder, & to convert the files for portable players I use DVD Shrink at 100% quality to copy the DVD with only 1 VOB file to my hard drive... Then I use the ATI Catalyst Control Center (Basic) to trans-code -- it only accepts 1 file (won't merge several), which is why I use the DVD Shrink step. If you have a compatible ATI card, you might also look at AsVideoConv, which gives you more options that the utility from ATI.
#17: "Installed on WinXP Home as Admin. It set the permissions to the files to Admin only and so the User accounts cannot write to them."
Well known prob with XP... limited user acct.s don't work right -- worse some software than others, but the fault is XP.

#19: "I’m confused.. it says it will rip to .vob.. but where is the .vob tab?"
Select mpg2, then the appropriate DVD profile (NTSC or PAL) -- output will be in a VOB file rather than mpg.
@Danoey (#2)^^
Simply mount the ISO in Vista using a tool such as the one here. The rip from the mounted drive.
funktioniert jetzt sehr gut, gute quali, leicht zu handeln - daumen nach oben
