Several of my computers run both Zorin OS (based on Ubuntu Linux) and Windows 11. When running Windows, I cannot access the Zorin partition. But when I use Zorin, I can access the Windows partitions (both system and data partitions), when Windows is not running.I will later today test if I can access aWindows folder, protected with the giveaway when running Zorin OS. If that is the case, anybody who has access to your computer, can use a Zorin OS USB stick to get access to ALL your Windows files.
I used this trick several years ago to rescue the photographs on a friend's crashed Windows computer. Because the disk itself was still intact, I recovered all his photographs.
gergn, As this laptop only has Windows 11, I tested the portable version of the giveaway and protected a data folder. Regretfully, I could not activate that with the giveaway key. Then, I used my Zorin OS USB stick to see if I could see my data folder. But Zorin did NOT reveal the original data. I only saw the .pff-file that contains a short encryption key. So, my data seem safe.
I did note a smal bug. On my desktop I have a shortcut to the data folder. I encrypted the shortcut instead of the data folder, using the right-click menu. That worked. But when I double-clicked the shortcut icon to get my data back, nothing happened. I had to go to the folder containing the .pff file and double-click that file. Then the window opened, and I could enter my encryption key.
All in all, the giveaway works as it should.
