For just over the past year, Hippo Edit (HE) has been my editor of choice (alongside 010 Editor) - (Both for commercial use).
Like most people have their favorite chair, a PC gamer has their favorite mouse, coders have their favorite file editor(s). For a professional who uses a file editor all day - to make the decision purely on price, free vs. $40 - is probably short changing your "work environment". I've tried all the major editors (I still do when curious), and there were things I liked and things I wished I could borrow from others. At the end of the day, I could keep changing and customising each editor to work the way I want.
There is a section in their forums http://forum.hippoedit.com/??&board=6.0 - where users talk about features in HippoEdit compared to other browsers (usually discussing positive features in the competition).
HippoEdit also offers up to a 40% discount if you have purchased and registered a commercial copy of another text editor.
One thing I should mention, for many of the more advanced features related to customising the editor - the help file only goes so far. For many tasks the answers I needed could only be found in the support forums. For casual use - most users will probably not even need to look at the help files.

@3 & 4 - The limitation to have portable installation is only "theoretical" and disabled in installer because of GiveawayOfTheDay registration process, which involves registry, that is not very portable.
The simplest way to overcome that: install trial version from hippoedit website (not x64 bit), select there portable way, and that install on top of it GiveawayOfTheDay version.
1. uninstall GOTD version if already installed
2. download and install trial version from HE website (select portable way)
3. then ON TOP of trial install GOTD version once more.
Or
1. just copy all the settings from User folder to HippoEDIT installation folder and that is all. Also works.
Full version does not have such limitation.
BUT DO NOT USE PORTABLE INSTALLATION FOR INSTALLING INTO PROGRAM FILES FOLDER on Win 7 x64.

Have been using for the past hour.
Downloaded after spending half an hour in the forums.
Very impressive. In an area that is extremely over-saturated, this may just become my regular goto editor.
Till now:
TextWrangler on the Mac.
Notepad++ on PC.
Having given up on DashCode, Komodo, Aptana, Geany, Dreamweaver, Jedit, and quite a few others.

Konnte erst jetzt vorgeschlagene Lösung probieren. Nur die Dateien aus der redist.zip in den Installationsordner kopiert, machten das Programm lauffähig.

leider haben wir mal wieder das "opa problem". keine ahnung von nichts aber davon reichlich. das hier ist nicht kostenlos, das hier ist trial. jeder kostenlose editor wie notepad++, pspad, bluefish, etc. kann gleichviel oder mehr und ist jederzeit bei jeder neuinstallation wieder völlig kostenlos sofort verfügbar. das einzige professionelle tool wäre UltraEdit, das hier ist typische "Klitschen-Software".

Meine Geistesblitze noch mal zusammengefaßt:

Klar was ist kostengünster als gar keine Kosten?

Da die Schnittmenge an ja beinhaltet, was andere Tools auch können, erschwert das natürlich die Bedienung, weil ich mir nichts merken kann. Deshalb ist mir auch nicht klar wofür man den wieder nimmt.

Immer wenn was nicht klar ist, beser Daumen hoch, um sich das nicht anmerken zu lassen, oder doch lieber Däumchen runter?

Der Autor gibt den Tip, die Trial Version runterzuladen und zu installieren, und dann die GaotD Version darüber zu installieren - voilà dann hätte man eine portable Version... leider kann das Tool noch keine Makros, ABER der Entwickler ist ziemlich engagiert und reagiert wenigstens auf die vielen Wünsche der Nutzer. Gutes Tool, obwohl mir persönlich med (google medcx) immer noch am besten gefällt.

Leider erscheint diesmal nur Fehlermeldung (XP):
....\HippoEDIT\HippoEdit.exe
Diese Anwendung konnte nicht gestartet werden, weil die Anwendungskonfiguration nicht korrekt ist. Zur Problembehebung sollten Sie die Anwendung neu installieren.
Das war wohl diesmal nichts!
Die Version 1.34 funktioniert, nach Zurückspielen des damaligen Registryeintrages.

Das Tool ist nicht schlecht,jedoch würde ich, wie schon weiter oben festgestellt,eher eine kostengünstige Freeware bevorzugen.Dieses Tool beherrscht auch die Schnittmengen sehr gut, was die Bedienung nicht unbedingt einfacher macht.Pauschal gesehen werde ich mir diesen Editor herunter holen und archivieren: Daumen hoch und vielen Dank.

Nehmt das nicht so ernst was ich weiter oben gesagt habe,
war natürlich nur Spaß. Klar kann man so einen Editor mit Zusatzfunktionen zum programmieren und patchen gut gebrauchen und diejenigen die den brauchen, beherschen gewöhlich auch englisch.
Warum soll ich also ein professionelles Tool wenn es nichts kostet nicht sogar Freeware vorziehen. Den Unsinn das Freeware immer besser ist und mehr kann, glauben sowieso nur Idioten. Das trifft tatsächlich nur für ganz bestimmte Tools zu.
Über Schnittmengen hinausgehende Funktionen gibt es im Vergleich bei allen ähnlichen Programmen, was den Vergleich schwerer macht als manche mit ihren Pauschalsprüchen hier glauben!

also ich sag nur notepad++, ist das beste als Editor und dazu auch noch freeware.
Meine Meinung 39,95$ für ein Programm welches auch als Freeware gibt, ist doch wohl aus der Luft gegriffen.

Bei dem großen Angebot von Freeware-Editoren frag ich mich, wer überhaupt für sowas Geld ausgibt? Auch, wenn er heute nichts kostet, habe ich ja nicht mal das Recht upzudaten. Es gibt bessere Freeware.

Nicht schlecht... ist auf jeden fall nen blick wert - aber ich denke ich bleibe bei Notepad++ ist opensource und bietet viele funktionen.
