The Good
* Fairly straightforward and simple to use.
* Allows you to rip a DVD or convert DVD video files already on your computer.
* Allows you to rip/convert to many output video formats.
* Has "profiles" for iPhone, PSP, Blackberry, etc.
* Works fairly fast.
* Gives you a fair bit of control over your output video in terms of settings (resolution, aspect ratio, audio bitrate, etc.)
* Can bypass most (if not all) kinds of DRM protection and region locks.
* Detects and skips the commercials at the beginning of DVDs and "fast forwards" to the actual DVD video.

Should I be concerned that my Avira antivirus is suspecting the setup.exe as having malware code? Is anyone else noticing such problems?

Good day all. Downloaded & installed on Vista Home Premium S2, 32X OK. From the features I’ve tried out so far, I agree with Ashraf’s comments on the quality of the DVD Ripper. But as it has only been available for a short time now, I’ll have to wait until later today to fully evaluate it.
But if you will look at the “Giveaway of the Day Project Team’s Blog “in the upper right corner, the 1st link is: “GAOTD teams up with Software Informer.” This new information will affect all of us in our downloading products here from now on, & there have been 6 comments on that new page so far. Several people yesterday were confused or irritated (or had security warnings) at the unexpected Software Informer coming with the download, & were not sure if it’s helpful or not. Many, including myself, had never heard of it before.
As Fubar mentioned yesterday, often time’s programs like the Software Informer have suggested versions that are actually older than current ones. I agree with his comment that I too would rather do my own updates. As some of mine are automatic, it could cause further confusion.
However, I also want to emphasize that regardless of this new issue, I have always been grateful to GAOTD for the daily opportunities that are generously provided from this website & for the wealth of information from the community here. Al

If your antivirus/antispyware is detecting setup.exe is "malicious", it's a false positive. That's because inside the setup.exe is bundled the "Software Informer" program, and anything similar is usually blocked by Antivirus apps.

Avast schlägt auch Alarm, keine Malware in diesem Sinne, aber "eindeutig 100% Spyware" wenn ich das so kleinlich definieren darf.

Die Setup Datei des Aplus-Konverters enthält ein Zusatzprogramm
(Software Informer), welches völlig harmlos ist.

Warum die Virenscanner da Alarm schlagen, ist völlig rätselhaft...
vielleicht, weil das Programm versteckt in der gepackten Zip-Datei
ist. naja,jedenfalls isses nur ein Updater von Software und keine Malware!
wer's nicht braucht,beim Setup einfach abwählen (Häckchen entfernen)
und nur den Konverter installieren.Dann gibts auch keine Meldung vom
Virenscanner mehr.
Bei der Installation den V-Scanner kurz deaktiviern,danach wieder
aktivieren. Dann klappts.

Habe die Setup.exe durch "VirusTotal" scannen lassen, Ergebnis: 5 von 41 Scannern meldeten einen Fund, und zwar nicht nur "heuristic" sondern auch mit Hinweis auf Malware.
Für mich ist das Proggie dieses Risiko nicht wert, also - weg damit!

Der Konverter von Aplus möchte bei der Installation auch gleich noch
Malware ("Software Informer") mitinstallieren,deshalb schlägt auch
der Guard von Avira an.
Den Guard bei der Installation auschalten und beim Setup des Konverters
aufpassen und das Häckchen beim Software Informer abwählen,dann müsste alles ok sein.

dasjenige, welches in der Lage ist AVI Dateien entsprechend zu konvertieren. Warte doch einfach ab, Konverter gibts hier durchschnittlich 5x in der Woche.

Der Alarm von Antivir ist ein heuristischer Treffer. Unser gutes Antivir ist bei Archiven manchmal ein bisserl empfindlich. Habs gerade mit 21 Scannern geprüft. Außer Antivir glaubt nur einer, dass die Datei Malware enthält -> Entwarnung!

Nach der Installation wird gefragt ob man Software Informer installieren will, dies sucht im Hintergrund nach Treibern und Softwareupdates - durchsucht also Deinen Rechner auch.
Insofern ist der Mailware Alarm völlig korrekt.

mein antivir machte auch terror.
ich glaube aber, es liegt daran, dass es an dem tool 'software informer 1.0 beta'liegt, welches zu dem hauptprogramm (s.o.) dazugepackt wurde. dieses schaut nach installierten proggis und ob dafür updates zur verfügung stehen.
ich habe es nicht installiert. beim hauptprogramm selber kein problem. antivir moppert auch nur bei der setup.exe des entpackten gotd-downloads.

Mit deiner Obrigkeitshörigkeit und deinem Weltbild, in dem sich die Erde um den Fleck Land dreht, in dem du zufällig lebst, kannst du nur Deutscher sein. Mag sein, dass das Programm in deinem Land verboten ist (und sich außer dir sogar einige deiner Mitbürger an seltsame, unüberwachbare Gesetze halten), aber die Welt besteht auch aus weniger repressiven Staaten, und in einigen davon spricht man auch deutsch, also wenn schon schreib gefälligst: "Bei mir ist das Programm verboten". :-))
