Maybe this will help...
Blu-Ray discs use a slightly different format [e.g. UDF 2.5] so Windows needs to be able to read that format -- that's only an issue in XP, where Aiseesoft Blu-Ray apps will add a hacked Toshiba driver. You do need a Blu-Ray drive to read actual BD discs, though Blu-Ray on DVD [which is spec] will work with regular DVD drives as long as Windows reads the Blu-Ray UDF format.
Retail Blu-Ray discs have loads of DRM, with menus etc. programmed using Java -- to play it completely, i.e. all features, you'll have to buy a player [unless one came with your Blu-Ray drive] because the developers that make these players have to pay licensing fees. If or as possible try before you buy because performance & features vary, sometimes quite a lot. Many will not play Blu-Ray in folders on your hard drive.
Many claim that a fair number of existing media players will play Blu-Ray, but playback is actually more at a beta level -- expect glitches from time to time. And as above don't expect them to fully play anything but the movie. Also, some retail Blu-Ray discs use VC1 video rather than the more common AVC/H.264 -- not every media player will handle that. And finally do not expect something like VLC to do anything about a Blu-Ray disc's DRM.
Aiseesoft's Blu-Ray Player basically works like their Blu-Ray copy &/or ripping apps to by-pass a retail disc's DRM. Like the free players others have mentioned, the Aiseesoft Blu-Ray Player [& similar players from other companies] does not play all features. For Blu-Ray discs it's IMHO heads & shoulders above something like VLC, but compared to other commercial [i.e. not free] players it comes down to price & how much you want to play a disc's features beyond the movie itself. Today obviously cost is not a problem.
When it comes to the actual quality of playback, AFAIK the only free players with much of anything in the way of enhancements are MPC-HC [ http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Media-Player-Classic-Home-Cinema ] & MPC-BE [ http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPC-BE ] -- otherwise if that's what you're after you'll have to get something like PowerDVD, & unless you spot it on sale, the versions that'll handle Blu-Ray can be a bit expensive. If you want or need those enhancements, which may help a lot on some systems, I *think* the most common route is to copy the video from a Blu-Ray disc unaltered into a MKV container file, then use one of those 2 players, but it's not something I do or have tried so research 1st at sites like videohelp.com . [If it's legal where you live, & if you're going to copy a Blu-Ray disc you own to your HDD to bypass DRM, writing the copy as a MKV file simply saves some hassles.]

I downloaded, installed, and played commercial "A Christmas Carol" Blu-ray Disc (BD), and I completely disagree with Giovanni.
Aiseesoft Blu-ray Player 6.1.3 smoothly plays this disc "with menu" whereas DAPlayer ends up giving 400 error. I have observed this problem with DAP several times before, and the problem still continues (their customer service also said sorry to me). My conclusion is that DAPlayer cannot play a purchased disc (it may play pirated BDs but I don't know).
Naturally, this GAOTD gets a thumbs up from me. Very nice interface, apparently faster than my Roxio CinePlayer (came with the system) but I don't like that they advertise when you start this player although you got a license, else they would get two thumbs up from me.
P.S. I would strongly suggest Giovanni to comment after testing since many of his recommendations just FAIL. He is a good contributor but he should not just google, and suggest something randomly.

Natürlich wieder ein prima tool von GAOTD. Ich habe zwar keine blu-ray Filme, bin aber über jede Abgabe die hier nichts kostet froh. Ich werde mich nun mit blu-ray befassen, da ich sonst keine Hobbies habe und mir dann auch welche kaufen. Also Daumen runter und vielen Dank!

Bei mir erscheint beim Abspielen jeder Datei nur ein grauer Bildschirm, während der Ton zu hören ist. System: WinXP SP3 - schade :-(

Der dümmliche Troll sollte mal schnell die Klappe halten!
Für BluRay-Softwareplayer zahlt man nach wie vor ne Menge Geld,
also ist das heutige Angebot recht nützlich.
Funktionieren tut es auch bestens mit meiner einzigen
Bluray und dem externen Player, den ich mir vor nem halben
Jahr zulegte. Also Daumen hoch - GUTES PROGRAMM! -

Hat keine GPU-Unterstützung und ist damit für leise und Stromsparende Wohnzimmer PC´s die auf Atom, A-350 Basis oder ähnliches aufgebaut sind völlig unbrauchbar. Und auf meinem 4-Kern-Rechner im Arbeitszimmer brauche ich so eine Software nicht. Blu-Ray Menus werden auch nicht abgespielt.

Vom Funktionsumfang und Funktionsweise dem Macgo Blu-Ray Player ähnlich (den gab es hier ja auch mal).
Kann auch nicht das Originalmenü darstellen. Zugriff auf Diskboni nur über 'Extra Titel' nach Dauer möglich.
Kann auch Screenshots von BRs erstellen (anders als beim Macgo auch per Button).
Bietet weniger Programmeinstellungen als der von Macgo, eigentlich nur Ordner und Art des Screenshots.
Sieht vom Design und der GUI einen Tick besser aus.
Durch den 50% Couponcode kostet es 16-17 Euro.
Konnte nicht rausfinden ob es auch eine lebenslange Lizenz ist wie bei Macgo oder nur Versionskauf. Weiß das einer?
Wer keine Kauf-BRs abspielen möchte, der kann den VLC Player nutzen, kann mehr und kostet nichts. Spielt aber keine gekauften BRs ab (kann den Kopierschutz nicht dekodieren).
Wer lieber das Original BR Menü hat und auf Screenshotfunktion verzichten kann der sollte zu teuer Software wie PowerDVD oder TotalMedia Theatre greifen.
Elendig lang lässt sich solch kostenlose Angebote wie dieses hier nicht nutzen da manche Disks mit veränderten Kopiermechanismen kommen und ein Softwareupdate benötigen (GOTD Lizenzen sind ja ohne Updates). Wem's gefällt der sollte zuschlagen solange es reduziert ist. Oder warten bis evtl. mal wieder Macgo angeboten wird.
